  • Descrição: Paris, 1900. The sixteen-year-old Anya, daughter of Mrs. Liouba Ranevskaya, comes to the City of Lights to take back to Russia her fragile and seductive mother, who has been abandoned by her lover, who has spent all of her money. On their way back, they see a cherry orchard in full bloom, in contrast to their withered financial situation. Her brother, Leonid, an idler, is taken care of by the eighty-year-old servant Firs. Leonid, unable to raise the money to pay off their debts, has burdened Varya, Liouba’s adopted daughter, with all of their problems. Varya has an eye for an uncouth but newly rich merchant, Lopakhin, whose father was a slave on the estate of the Ranevskayas, and who now, in order for them to be saved from financial ruin, suggests that they divide the cherry orchard into properties and sell them for holiday homes. The teacher and intellectual Peter Trofimov hangs around Anya and wins her over, but their relationship is fruitless. The Ranevskayas fade away, unable to save the cherry orchard, which is sold off to Lopakhin. They abandon their estate the moment the lumberjacks move in with their axes and start cutting down the cherry trees, forgetting old Firs in the deserted mansion, who dies along with the memories of a lifetime.
